Context

Sow nutrition is a key aspect of pig farming. To achieve the technical and economic goals set by the farmer, it is essential to fully realize the sows’ performance potential, which requires meeting their nutritional needs. To accomplish this, the nutritionist must follow two steps. The first is to calculate the sow’s nutritional requirements for each specific situation: her life stage (gilt, pregnant, lactating), as well as genetics, parity, environment, housing system, body condition, and technical objectives… The second step involves determining, for each stage of the sow’s life and within the context of the farm, how best to utilize available feed to meet the previously calculated nutritional needs.

  • Mixscience supports its partners in this process through Mega Sow Good, a digital tool that calculates feeding programs for gilts in quarantine, pregnant sows, and lactating sows for a given farm, based on the farmer’s context and objectives.

Deliverables

  • Visuals showing sow requirements and the nutrient intakes that meet them based on the feed data entered.
  • Recommended feeding programs based on the objectives entered
  • Monitoring of sow body condition scores
  • Automatic reports.

Key features

Mega Sow Good is a powerful tool that draws on Mixscience’s expertise in sow nutrition. The tool adapts to all aspects of the farm: the technical context, the genetics used, and the farmer’s objectives. Mega Sow Good is a true decision-making tool: it suggests a feeding program based on available feeds, but can also guide the formulator in designing the feeds themselves. Finally, by monitoring the body condition of each sow, Mega Sow Good becomes a herd management tool. The tool is easy to use. To save time, the manufacturer’s feeds are pre-entered, and it is easy to integrate new products: feed mixes, farm-produced feeds, and nutritional supplements. Reports are generated automatically, providing the farmer with a clear and quick overview.
