Context

Feed accounts for a significant portion of the environmental footprint – and in particular the carbon footprint – of animal production. This is a major challenge for all sectors, as reducing this footprint is already a societal expectation and will gradually become a regulatory requirement.
Matriciel is a Mixscience service offered to compound feed manufacturers and feed mills to calculate the environmental impacts of their compound feeds and identify opportunities for improvement in formulation.

Deliverables

  • Calculation of the impact of 7 environmental criteria for all raw materials and additives in the plant: Greenhouse gases, Air acidification, Land use, Eutrophication (terrestrial, surface water, and marine), Total energy consumption
  • Regular updates of 7 environmental criteria in the formulation matrix
  • Calculation of the environmental impact of all compound feeds
  • Identification and prioritization of levers for action

Key features

Mixscience has recognized expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for food, evaluating every stage from the cultivation of raw materials to the delivery of compound feed to livestock farms; this method, which complies with the guidelines of the French Animal Nutrition Interprofessional Association, has been validated by the consulting firm Carbone 4.
In addition to the precise calculation of the carbon footprint, Matriciel enables continuous monitoring of 6 other environmental criteria.
The measurement of environmental impact gains in precision thanks to detailed knowledge of the production process of the raw materials used, supplier by supplier.
Mixscience adapts environmental metrics to local specifics: by incorporating local suppliers, as well as the particularities of raw material sourcing, the factory’s industrial process, and feed deliveries.
